Rio Ferdinand has denied a charge of violent conduct after last weekend's win over Hull City and will attend a disciplinary hearing at the Football Association on Thursday.
The Manchester United player faces a possible three-match ban if found guilty of the offence, which relates to an incident involving Hull City's Craig Fagan during the second half of the Premier League match at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand was given until 6pm today to respond to the charge, with a committee of the FA set to hear the case on Thursday.
If the England stopper had accepted the punishment he would have missed United's crucial clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, followed by a home game against Portsmouth and a tricky trip to Aston Villa four days' later.
The 30-year-old could still be banned for those games if found guilty, with the prospect of an additional one-match suspension now possible if the panel consider his case frivolous or without basis.
Given his case will not be heard until Thursday, Ferdinand is eligible to play for his side in their Carling Cup semi-final, second leg against local rivals Manchester City tonight.
United trail 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg last Tuesday.
