Rio Ferdinand has risked a further extension to his four-match Football Association ban by launching a second appeal against the punishment.
The Manchester United defender was handed a three-match ban for striking Hull City strike Craig Fagan during a 4-0 home win last month.
The FA dismissed Ferdinand's "frivolous" appeal against the ban, which enabled him to play in United's Carling Cup semi-final win over Manchester City, and extended it by one match.
The 31-year-old's second appeal could either see the ban reduced to three games or extended to five, which would see him ruled out of the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa on February 28th.
Ferdinand started his ban by missing the 3-1 win at Arsenal on Sunday, while he is currently due to miss a home game against Portsmouth and trips to Aston Villa and Everton.
The centre-back, touted as a possible successor to John Terry as England captain should Fabio Capello strip him of the armband following allegations over off-the-field problems, had only just returned from a three-month absence due to a calf injury when he struck Fagan.
