Roger Federer reached the quarterfinals of the Montreal Masters this evening after he thrashed Andy Murrays conqueror Fabio Fognini 6-1 6-1.
The world number one, who was only playing his second match since claiming his fifth Wimbledon title last month, barely broke a sweat to beat the Italian qualifier in just 45 minutes.
"I'm very content," said Federer. "You don't expect [to win] this fast. By the time I sat down at the end, I was only just starting to get warm.
"It was a solid win and I'm very positive after my first two matches."
Federer, the defending Montreal Masters champion, now faces Lleyton Hewitt or Dominik Hrbaty in the next round.
The Swiss star is looking to win a third title in Montreal and is on course to set up another blockbusting final with arch-rival Rafael Nadal of Spain.
Nadal faces Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in the fourth round on Friday.
In other notable results from the tournament today, third seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia beat Argentinian David Nalbandian 6-2 6-3.
Russia's Nikolay Davydenko put aside the betting controversy surrounding him to defeat compatriot Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 6-3.
