A list of 200 words and phrases local councils should never use has been sent out across the country by the Local Government Association.

The LGA said certain phrases alienate the public and get in the way of people accessing council services.

The phrases include taxonomy, re-baselining, mainstreaming, holistic governance, contestability, predictors of beaconicity and synergies.

"The public sector must not hide behind impenetrable jargon and phrases," said Councillor Margaret Eaton, chairman of the LGA.

"Why do we have to have 'coterminous, stakeholder engagement' when we could just 'talk to people' instead?"

"Councils have a duty, not only to provide value for money to local people, but also to tell people what they get for the tax they pay," she continued.

"People would be furious if they have no idea of what services their cash is paying for and how they should get to use them."
