Brian Barwick the chief executive of the Football Association (FA) is set to leave his position at Soho Square.
His resignation will be made official at a news conference on Thursday, although news of his departure became clear during England's friendly against Czech Republic at Wembley.
Barwick's career before becoming FA chief executive was as a high profile executive within television. He was handed the job at Soho Square following the departure of Mark Palios in 2004.
It is believed Barwick's departure is closely linked with the appointment of Lord Triesman as the FA's independent chairman in February.
Since the new position was introduced Barwick's role within the FA has become increasingly marginalised.
Barwick has recently introduced the "respect" campaign and has got the national football centre in Burton back on track but it has been Lord Triesman who has been the voice of the FA.
Earlier today it was Lord Triesman who congratulated John Terry on behalf of the FA after England boss Fabio Capello named him as his permanent captain.
Barwick's legacy at the FA may well end up being linked with England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
It was Barwick who eventually appointed Steve McClaren as manager for that campaign, having publicly courted both Martin O'Neill and Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Barwick may not be replaced as chief executive due to the responsibilities taken on by Lord Triesman since his arrival.
