Exeter and Wycombe have joined League Two champions Brentford in gaining promotion into League One.
A 1-0 win over Port Vale at the Don Valley Stadium was enough to see Exeter leapfrog Wycombe into second place. Richard Logan scored the winner for Exeter 19 minutes from time.
Wycombe finished a point behind Exeter in the league after they fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat against Notts County, who had lost their last five games.
John Thompson gave County the lead on the half hour mark, before David McCracken equalised for Wycombe. Notts County won the game in the second-half through another goal from Thompson and in the end Wycombe were lucky to gain automatic qualification.
They would have been edged-out by Bury on goal difference had the Shakers been able to beat Accrington Stanley by two clear goals, but they could only win 1-0.
Bury have joined Gillingham, Rochdale and Shrewsbury and will have to fight it out for promotion via the play-offs.
Chester had an outside shot of escaping relegation, but any hope they had ended after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Darlington.
