Kevin Nolan was sent off for a horror challenge in Newcastle's 0-0 draw with Everton at St James's Park.
Nolan was shown a straight red for a two-footed lunge in the first-half which led Victor Anichebe to be substituted with an ankle injury.
But David Moyes' men were unable to capitalise on their man advantage and the point sees them remain in sixth position while the Magpies climb to 14th.
Everton's afternoon began badly with Mikel Arteta stretchered off in the fourth minute after suffering ligament damage when he fell awkwardly. His replacement Segundo Castillo came close to making an
instant impact when his strike from 20 yards whistled past the post.
The Toffees continued to dominate with Joseph Yobo's header goalwards cleared while Phil Jagielka scuffed a volley wide from close range.
Newcastle eventually woke up and should have taken the lead when Nicky Butt played in Peter Lovenkrands but the Dutchman screwed his shot wide, while Ryan Taylor curled a free-kick over the bar.
But the Magpies hopes of victory were dashed when Nolan was sent off by referee Lee Mason for an x-rated challenge on Anichebe, who hobbled off in stoppage time.
Everton tried in vain to break down the ten-men of Newcastle in the second half with Jack Rodwell firing wide while Yobo lashed a shot over. The Magpies continued to look threatening on the break with
Jonas Gutierrez's lob dipping over.
Substitute Louis Saha blazed his effort off-target from the edge of the box in the dying minutes as Newcastle clung on for a point.
