A comprehensive roundup of all the action from the top leagues in Spain, Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands begins with news from southern Europe.
In Spain's La Liga it was another bad weekend for league leaders Real Madrid, whose advantage at the top of the table is down to two points following another loss.
Their run of three losses in their last four games took an unfortunate turn as they slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Getafe in controversial circumstances.
The winner for the visitors came after Arjen Robben thought he had scored for Real, only to have the goal ruled out for offside.
However, as the majority of the home side celebrated before seeing the assistant's raised flag, Getafe played on and scored at the other end just after the hour mark before holding out for a famous win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Meanwhile Barcelona beat Levante 5-1 at home, thanks mainly to a hat-trick from Samuel Eto'o, to close the gap at the top of the table.
Villarreal remain third after a 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao, but are still eight points behind Barca and ten behind Real.
In Italy, Inter Milan maintained their unbeaten record in Serie A with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at European-chasing Sampdoria - Hernan Crespo grabbing an equaliser on 76 minutes for the visitors after Antonio Cassano had given the home team a second-half lead.
AS Roma close the gap on the leaders with a good 1-0 win over Fiorentina, who dropped one place to fifth after the defeat.
AC Milan leapfrogged the Stadio Olimpico outfit after Filippo Inzaghi's late winner in a 2-1 triumph at home to Palermo.
Juventus stay third but lost ground on the leaders after a 2-1 away defeat to Reggina. Alessandro Del Piero looked to have earned the visitors a point until Javier Zanetti was sent off for Juve and Nicola Amoruso slotted home a last-gasp penalty.
In Germany, Bayern Munich extended their advantage at the top of the Bundesliga by a point after their 1-1 home draw with Hamburger SV coincided with second-placed Werder Bremen's 1-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Ze Roberto scored Bayern's goal after Hamburger SV took the lead at the Allianz Arena through Ivica Olic. The Bavarian giants also had midfielder Mark van Bommel sent off for two bookable offences.
Third-placed Leverkusen closed in on the top two after defender Manuel Friedrich's late winner gave them a 1-0 win over Schalke 04.
In France's Ligue 1, leaders Lyon have opened up a three-point gap at the top of the table with a 2-0 home win over struggling FC Metz thanks to a double strike from Brazilian forward Fred.
Second-placed Bordeaux could only manage a goalless draw at home to Lille, although AS Nancy in third beat Lens 2-1 to stay four points clear of fourth-placed side Le Mans, who beat Valenciennes 2-1.
And finally in Holland's Eredivisie, it looks to be turning into a two-horse race at the top of the table as PSV Eindhoven and Ajax Amsterdam continued to pull away from third-placed Feyenoord.
Leaders PSV won for the sixth time in seven games as they romped to a 4-1 home win over De Graafschap - striker Danko Lazovic grabbing a brace.
Ajax kept pace with the top side with a hard-earned 3-2 victory at fifth-placed NAC. The visitors took the lead through top-scorer Klass-Jan Huntelaar before Matthew Amoah and Rob Penders turned the scoreline on its head with two goals early in the second half.
However, Urby Emanuelson equalised for the visitors with 15 minutes left and six minutes later Johnny Heitinga bagged the winner for Ajax.
Feyenoord, meanwhile, played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Heracles as they lost ground at the top.
