Sven Goran Eriksson has been sacked as Mexico coach after disappointing performances in recent World Cup qualifiers.
The former England manager saw his Mexico side fall to a miserable 3-1 defeat to Honduras on Wednesday, which leaves them fourth in their six team CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group four points behind leaders USA.
Mexico will have to face a team from South America in a two-legged qualifier if they finish fourth and fail to gain automatic qualification.
"We could not take risks with qualification for the World Cup, and we could not rely solely on results at the Estadio Azteca (Mexico's home ground)," said Mexican Football Federation president Justino Compean.
"We had a meeting with Mr Eriksson and - although it is a shame for me and a lot of people - we told Mr Eriksson that his spell with the national team was over. Personally, I want to thank Mr Eriksson."
Eriksson took over at Mexico last June when he replaced Hugo Sanchez, but he has only managed to guide the side to one win in the last seven matches.
The 61-year-old was linked with the vacant Portsmouth job in February when he first came under-pressure at Mexico. But Eriksson insisted he was determined to stay with Mexico and take them to the World Cup next year.
