The Star Trek franchise is set for a revival after signing up the Mission: Impossible III director to direct its latest movie.
Daily Variety reported that J.J. Abrams will direct the 11th box office feature of the sci-fi series, due to be released in 2008.
Abrams' latest feature is due to hit UK screens next month and has climbed to fame with TV shows such as "Alias" and "Lost". He will help write and produce the latest Star Trek movie which will focus on the early days of the characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock.
Set to be a winner for Star Trek fans worldwide, the new movie will let its followers witness the first meeting between the two characters at Star Trek Academy and join them on their first outer-space mission.
Star Trek is hoping to revive its franchise following a decline in success of its releases since its Star Trek: The Next Generation series with Captain Picard at the helm of the Enterprise.
It's most recent box office release, Star Trek: Nemesis bombed in the box office, while its latest series, Star Trek: Enterprise, which follows the early days of Star Trek, was axed after just four seasons.
Star Trek has released ten box office features and 726 TV episodes.
