Sherlock is to return for a third series, the makers of the BBC One drama have confirmed.
The co-creator of the Bafta-winning show Steven Moffat had previously told BBC News that there was no guarantee that the show would return after the second series concluded.
However, he wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter on Sunday (January 15th) night: "Of course there's going to be a third series - it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!"
The show is a contemporary take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic detective tales. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role and Martin Freeman as his assistant Dr Watson.
Its final episode of the second series was watched by an average of 7.9 million people, compared with the 8.8 million average that viewed the opening episode on new year's day.
The first series of the show took home the Bafta for best drama series in 2011, having received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
