Ricky Gervais has been chosen to host next year's Golden Globe awards, it has been announced.
The award-winning UK comic will become the Golden Globes' first host since 1995 when he presents the telecast on January 17th from Beverly Hills.
Gervais, 48, has previously said he would not want to host major awards ceremonies due to a lack of 'freedom'.
But in a statement he said there were "just some things you don't turn down".
"Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host," he said.
Paul Telegdy, executive vice president of alternative programming at NBC and Universal Media Studios said Gervais was "one of the funniest people on the planet".
"His unique comedic style will enhance the only awards show that brings together television and film stars to celebrate entertainment's biggest night of the year," he added.
Gervais, who won almost every award going on both sides of the Atlantic for The Office and follow-up Extras, recently saw his first major film The Invention of Lying receive mixed reviews.
The second movie written and directed by him, Cemetery Junction, is due to be released in April 2010.
He is also in talks with HBO over the mooted Ricky Gervais Show.
