Emmerdale actor Ben Freeman has been charged with rape while on holiday in Barbados, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

The 26-year-old, who has been in the ITV1 soap for eight years, was arrested and charged by local police following accusations by a British woman on the Caribbean island.

He had been due to attend a court hearing on Friday but this was postponed.

The Foreign Office said the alleged rape was first reported to Barbadian police on Wednesday.

"The accused is also a British national and we can confirm his details. The next of kin are aware and both individuals are receiving consular assistance," a spokesperson said.

Freeman has played Scott Windsor in Emmerdale since 1998 following a stint on children's show Grange Hill.
