Helen Mirren will need to expand her trophy cabinet yet again after picking up two Screen Actors Guild awards.

The three-time Academy award-nominated actress received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen and was named best female actor in a leading role. She also picked up honours as best female actor in a television movie for her performance of another monarch, Elizabeth I, in the movie of the same name.

But the majestic success might have never happened for Mirren if she had let her fashion conscience interfere with her acting career. When she first set eyes upon the Queen-style outfits the 61-year-old star admitted she dreaded donning the sensible shoes, pearls and tweed jackets.

"I thought 'I can't play anyone who chooses to wear those clothes'. I just can't do it," she said.

Although Mirren is not a fan of her wardrobe, the Prime Suspect star learned to love the monarch, speaking of her admiration for a person "without vanity, but with a great sense of discipline, duty and courage, and that I understand".

The star-studded Sag award ceremony also saw Forest Whitaker pick up an award for best male actor in a leading role for his portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

With both Forest and Helen up for similar accolades at the Oscars, could this be a prediction of yet more awards for the pair?
