Coronation Street actor Michael Le Vell will not face charges relating to allegations of sexual assault after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) found insufficient evidence to progress with the case.

Le Vell, real name Michael Robert Turner, was arrested in September 2011 on suspicion of historic sexual assault of a youngster.

He has played Kevin Webster on the northern soap for 28 years and strenuously denied the claims.

Now, the authorities have announced that no further action will be taken against the Hale, Cheshire-based actor, 46.

The CPS said there was "no realistic prospect of conviction" and Greater Manchester Police have been informed accordingly.

Le Vell is a father of two but split with his wife of 25 years after the claims surfaced.

His storylines in the soap have ranged from extra-marital affairs to a prison stint, but he was most recently involved in a plot featuring a £200,000 scratch card and a bid to win back Sally, the mother of his onscreen children.
