Last year's X Factor winner Joe McElderry has played down Cher Lloyd's chances of winning this year's competition - because too many people are talking about her.

According to the McElderry theory, the stand-out characters going into the live finals of the X Factor competition rarely end up winning.

Last year, for instance, Danyl Johnson and Jamie Archer were hotly tipped for success after wowing audiences with versions of With a Little Help From My Friends and Sex on Fire.

However, they both full short - leaving McElderry to take the 2009 X Factor crown.

"Everyone's talking about Cher Lloyd, so it probably won't be her," the Geordie explained in an interview with Now Magazine.

"That's the way it always happens. There are huge expectations on her but it's too much pressure before the shows even start - she's fantastic but she won't win."

Meanwhile, rumours of wild cards mean Gamu Nhengu is still joint-second favourite to secure a top-three finish despite failing to make it through to the final stage of the competition.
