Comedian Lee Hurst has been fined £242 for smashing an audience member's mobile phone during a stand-up performance.

The former They Think It's All Over star admitted a charge of criminal damage at Guildford magistrates' court on Monday.

Hurst, of Limehouse, east London, had initially denied breaking Gareth Hughes' Motorola K1 handset during a gig at a pub in Guildford last year.

However, the 46-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge today, saying he had broken the phone as he was concerned that Mr Hughes might be secretly filming his performance.

Hurst told the court that footage of his performances often surfaced on online video portals, such as YouTube.

He also claimed writers sometimes recorded his material and passed off his jokes as their own.

He was fined £60 and ordered to pay £80 compensation, costs of £87 and a £15 victim surcharge.
