Former TV presenter Robert Kilroy-Silk has become the first person to be voted off I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! after a public vote.

The controversial MEP received the greatest number of votes and will leave the Australian jungle after only 12 days.

However, the politician's exit was only narrowly decided, with less than 0.5 per cent difference between the number of votes received by Robert and former Metropolitan Police commissioner Brian Paddick.

Robert admitted to feeling sadness at leaving the camp but added: "'I'm fine because I'm going to see my [wife] Jan."

He added: "I pleaded with the viewers for another night, just one more night, but they wouldn't give it to me."

Following his eviction, Robert's first question to ITV1 presenters Ant and Dec was the result of the Liverpool-Marseille football match - and he received good news as the Anfield side won 1-0.

Of his time in the camp, he said: "It was what I expected, but it was more challenging. I never thought I would do the live trial but I was glad I was given the opportunity"

The MEP for East Midlands said he had taken part in the Bushtucker trials to make his grandchildren laugh.

Fellow contestant and Star Trek actor George Takei had described Robert as a "real villain" during his stay.

But the TV veteran told Ant and Dec he had been true to himself while in the jungle camp.

"The me that was there is me, whether I'm nasty or nice that was me, I'm myself.

"I have very strong views and I like to express them clearly... but I like to do what's right and what's fair."

Earlier Esther Rantzen had earned immunity from the public vote after emerging victorious in a Bush Battle, which saw the celebrities trapped inside a coffin with only creepy crawlies for company.
