Katy Perry has admitted she had to disguise her nerves while hosting the MTV European Music awards (EMAs).

The 24-year-old singer presented the ceremony in Liverpool in November 6th, winning the best new artist prize as well as performing her song I Kissed A Girl.

And having joked about her hosting ability during the EMAs broadcast, the singer revealed the evening was a truly thrilling experience.

"The hair was raised up on every part of my body, as I was running across the arena in my slippers trying to get the next outfit on, getting my skin stuck in the zipper, being pulled and prodded and having my face wiped!" she told inthenews.co.uk.

"If people had run that race with me they would have seen so many amazing things, but I'd get up on stage and [puts on composed face] 'So, our next presenter… ', and look prepared."

Asked if she felt prepared for presenting the prestigious show in front of 10,000 people in the Liverpool Echo Arena and an audience of millions, the I Kissed A Girl star said she reached a point of new return shortly before the ceremony began.

"I remember when I was straddling that chapstick thinking: 'Ok, I'm about to come up from underground riding a big chapstick, looking like a football player in front of bajillions of people… there's no turning back now!'"

She added: "Being onstage definitely helps prepare you for something like that but I'm only used to playing club gigs, not being broadcast to two billion people.

"When they told me that at the dinner the night before, I said: 'I hope you have an understudy!'"

Katy Perry's new single Hot N Cold, is released on November 24th.
