Barrowman underwent tests to establish cause of homosexuality in documentary
John Barrowman has undergone a series of tests to establish the cause of his homosexuality in a new documentary series.

The openly-gay Torchwood star is subjected to a set of experiments in BBC1's The Making of Me to determine whether he was born homosexual or if his sexuality was determined by his environment.

And following the tests, the I'd Do Anything Judge has urged the parents of homosexuals to watch the programme in order to gain a greater understanding of their children.

"When I first started in my career, I thought I'm here to entertain people, nothing more," he told the Radio Times.

"But as I've got older, my career has gone in a different direction - particularly with Torchwood.

"Now I get a lot of letters from young people who are either in the position of being shunned by their families or are fearful of coming out.

"I thought I could help those people and help everyone understand... well, it's a question. Is it nature or is it nurture?"

He added: "If you're a parent with a gay child, watch it."

According to Barrowman, 41, he realised he was homosexual when he was eight years old.

The Making of Me begins on BBC1 on July 24th.
