Actor and comedian Ricky Gervais has labelled the Twitter microblogging site "undignified" and "pointless".
The Office star, who hosts the 2010 Golden Globes this weekend, expressed his bemusement at the popularity of the social networking site in a post on his Ricky Gervais. Obviously blog.
Though his close friend Jonathan Ross is one of the UK's most prolific celebrity Twitter users, 47-year-old Gervais said he had given up on using the site as "I just don't get it, I'm afraid".
"I'm sure it's fun as a networking device for teenagers but there's something a bit undignified about adults using it," he added.
"Particularly celebrities who seem to be showing off by talking to each other in public.
"If I want to tell a friend, famous or otherwise what I had to eat this morning, I'll text them."
He added: "And since I don't need to make new virtual friends, it seemed a bit pointless to be honest."
Gervais has over 13,000 followers on Twitter, despite posting just six tweets in a month.
