Actor and director David Schwimmer has become engaged to longterm girlfriend Zoe Buckman, his representative has confirmed.

It was reported last week that Schwimmer, best known for playing Ross Geller in Friends, had asked Buckman, a photographer, to marry him and was likely to announce the proposal after completing work on a play in Chicago.

The engagement of the 43-year-old Schwimmer and 24-year-old Buckman has now been confirmed by Schwimmer's spokesperson to Entertainment Weekly.

Schwimmer and Buckman are believed to have met while the former was in London in 2007 directing the Simon Pegg comedy Run Fatboy Run. Neither has been married before.
