Newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky has announced she is three months pregnant with her first child.

The 35-year-old is said to be 'ecstatic'. Kaplinsky married investment banker Justin Bower in August 2005, after meeting earlier that year.

A friend told The Mirror: "She could not be happier but obviously the timing could have been a bit better.

"But she will be able to spend much of the day with her baby and go to the studio a bit later."

Kaplinsky made a high-profile move from the BBC to Five for a reported £1 million salary in February. Ratings for the news bulletin has increased 72 per cent since she took over as presenter.

But London newspaper the Evening Standard has suggested that as she is employed on a freelance basis, she will lose out on pay while on maternity leave.

Her first month and a half of maternity leave could have earned her 90 per cent of her current salary, estimated to be £20,000 a week, had she been on a full contract.
