Charlie Sheen and his wife Brooke Mueller are to seek counselling in a bid to save their marriage after the actor was arrested on Christmas Day following allegations of domestic violence, it has emerged.
The Platoon star was arrested for second degree assault, menacing and criminal mischief in the Aspen ski resort in Colorado on Friday and the release of Mueller's emergency call revealed the severity of the couple's marital problems.
Though Sheen has denied the accusation, Mueller told police: "My husband had me with a knife. I was scared for my life and he threatened me."
Sheen, 44, has since flown to Los Angeles after being released on bail while Mueller, 32, remains in Aspen with the couple's twin boys.
Their altercation came about after Mueller reportedly asked Sheen for a divorce and a source close to the couple has said the marriage may not survive this incident.
"Brooke and Charlie still love each other, but they are very different," the source told People.
"For the good of the children they definitely want to see if counselling will help before anything further is decided."
The pair "will make their best effort at counselling", the source added, "[but] divorce is definitely a possibility".
Sheen's Colorado-based attorney Richard Cummins told People on Tuesday: "They have two children together and they love one another and they're going to work through what is a difficult time and they're going to do that together and as privately as possible."
