The late Steve Irwin is to appear in a new wildlife TV series fronted by his daughter, Bindi, US cable executives have announced.

Irwin, affectionately known to fans as the 'Crocodile Hunter', began filming the show with the eight-year-old early last year, ahead of his death in September, when he was killed after a stingray's deadly barb struck his chest while he was shooting a documentary in his native Australia.

Bindi: The Jungle Girl will premiere on June 9th, the Discovery Kids Channel said in a statement yesterday, with Irwin's wife Terri having helped her daughter to finish filming following the naturalist's untimely death.

The weekly series, commissioned to try and help get more children interested in wildlife conservation, will see naturalist Irwin "drop in" to the "cozy treehouse" above a rainforest which his daughter filmed the show from, the cable channel said.

"Both of Bindi's parents, Steve and Terri, along with Australia Zoo director, Wes Mannion, drop into her treehouse to join in the fun and share their stories of adventures into animal habitats from across the globe," the Discovery Kids Channel said.

Bindi will also host a special programme dedicated to the memory of her father on Animal Planet, the night before her new series premieres.

The show, My Daddy The Croc Hunter, will go behind the scenes of some of Irwin's "most exciting" TV shows and movie projects and will include footage captured during his last crocodile research "adventure" in August 2006, when Bindi helped her father capture crocodiles.

Meanwhile, Irwin is continuing to receive posthumous praise for his work as a TV wildlife expert, having been nominated in two categories at the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA) Awards.
