X Factor judge Simon Cowell is considering organising an enormous European-wide talent search which would put Eurovision to shame.

According to the Daily Record newspaper, the music industry kingpin is currently in talks to establish whether or not there is sufficient interest across Europe for such a contest.

If the continent does feel inspired to sing its socks off for Cowell Eurovision could find itself threatened, after 50 years of dominance, with competition as the world's premier international talent contest.

"To use a football analogy, we (existing competitions in the UK) are currently the Premiership and it would be the European Champions League," a source told the Daily Record.

"All countries would compete in their national competitions at the same time, then the winners would fight it out to be champions of Europe."

Cowell has already made it big in the US, regularly appearing as a host on American Idol alongside Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul.

His grumpy demeanour and scathingly honest appraisals of wannabe popstars' performances have made him a love-hate figure with the British and American publics, but it remains to be seen whether audiences in France, Spain, Germany and the rest of Europe will be as welcoming.

The 47-year-old music mogul is appearing on ITV1 tonight, hoping to shepherd his X Factor hopefuls, Ray Quinn and Leona Lewis, into the series finale next week.
