Simon Cowell's popular talent shows The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent have been snubbed at the Royal Television Society Awards with Charlie Brooker's Newswipe triumphing in the entertainment category.
The announcement at the awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Tuesday evening prompted a huge cheer from the audience on an extremely successful night for the BBC.
The broadcaster made off with 18 awards in total, including best drama series for The Street and best actor and best actress prizes for David Oyelowo and Naomie Harris for Small Island.
Comedian Harry Hill scooped the night's top prize, defeating Michael McIntryre and Ant and Dec, to be named best entertainment performance for his ITV show TV Burp.
Elsewhere, Louis Theroux was named best presenter for his BBC documentary A Place For Paedophiles and Miranda Hart won the comedy performance award for her self-titled show.
American advertising drama Mad Men also won the best international award, while The Thick of It picked up the best scripted comedy prize.
Also, EastEnders landed the best soap prize, although Coronation Street creator Tony Warren was later presented with the lifetime achievement award for his work on the ITV show.
