Comedian Bill Bailey says he would love to be in the upcoming Hobbit films - but only if he landed an official audition.

The former Never Mind the Buzzcocks team captain is the subject of an internet petition regarding the films, with fans attempting to secure Bailey an audition to play one of the dwarves who accompany Bilbo Baggins to the Lonely Mountain.

But speaking ahead of the new release of his new DVD, Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra, the classically-trained musician said it would be "great" to appear in Guillermo del Toro's film, should he earn an audition in the traditional fashion.

"There's been a few of these online petitions, one of them was to get me to write the UK's Eurovision song and another one was to have me cast as the new Doctor Who and then there's the Hobbit one," he told inthenews.co.uk.

"I don't know whether it does any good!" he joked. "I think it probably just winds people up!"

The 45-year-old had joked about auditioning to play the dwarf Gimli in the Lord of the Rings movies but insisted he would rather any potential involvement in the Hobbit films would be based on merit.

He told inthenews.co.uk: "I'd like to get an audition through the right channels, rather than have this casting bloke be handed thousands of signatures!

"He'd say [American accent] 'Aw, not this guy - he's a petition guy! I don't want to see this petition guy ever again!'"
