The tenth series of Big Brother has begun with 16 new contestants revealed on the Channel 4 show.

Oxford graduate Freddie Drayton, 23, was the first to enter the house as this year's hopefuls were informed they were not yet official housemates.

For the first three days of this year's series, the contestants will be forced to live and sleep in a bare living room as they complete tasks to earn official housemate status.

The contestants will be offered only cold porridge to eat and if they wish to bathe, must do so in a bathtub in a garden, filling it with cold water while using a bucket with holes in it.

Those who fail or refuse a task will be left at the mercy of the public as to if they will be granted housemate status and on Sunday night any non-housemates will leave and be met by Davina McCall during a special live show direct from the house.

The eight female contestants unveiled on Thursday night's launch show were; retail manager Noirin, 25; study support assistant Beinaizir, 28; 20-year-old glamour model Sophie; professional boxer and artist Angel, 35; beauty consultant Saffia, 27; 26-year-old private banking assistant Sophia, 26 and Lisa, 41, and 21-year-old Karly, both of whom are unemployed.

The boys to enter the house were; Freddie, 23; Brazilian student Rodrigo, also 23; customer service advisor Charlie, 22; Kris, a 24-year-old visual merchandiser; events organiser Siavash, 23; student union president Sree, 25; 35-year-old window fitter Marcus, and 18-year-old Floridian student Cairon.
