West End impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber has been given the all-clear after battling prostate cancer, he has confirmed.
The composer was diagnosed with the disease last October after complaining of a weak bladder and had his prostate gland removed at a London clinic.
The procedure was more painful than would have been expected, due to complications caused by the scar tissue left by an appendicitis operation Lloyd Webber had as a three-year-old.
After being given the all-clear, the 61-year-old said the diagnosis was "the hugest relief".
"We have arrived at the end of a long journey at the best possible outcome," he wrote in the Daily Mail. "In my case, I will be 62 next year and I have five children. Most importantly, I am alive, my children have a father."
Lloyd Webber's prostate complaint was aggravated by an existent E. coli infection and the Any Dream Will Do judge has urged all men to receive regular check-ups from their GP.
"If that infection had been found and cured, I could have been blissfully unaware that I had a cancerous tumour that was on the verge of breaking loose around the rest of my body," he added.
"I could have thought my frequent trips to the bathroom were due to a weak bladder. I have been bloody lucky."
