In a quite interesting development to the BBC schedules, grownup quiz QI is moving from BBC2 to BBC1.

From the new year onwards the Stephen Fry-fronted show, where celebrity guests win points by being 'quite interesting' – but not necessarily right – will be screened on BBC1.

The move comes after five successful seasons and years on BBC2, where the show has enjoyed an average audience of three million and a peak of 4.8 million viewers.

BBC1 controller Jay Hunt said QI was a "fantastic addition" to the channel.

"I am delighted that a show which has proved its popularity on BBC2 will now feature in our schedule allowing even more people to enjoy its unique blend of wit and obscure trivia," she said.

Roly Keating, Hunt's BBC2 counterpart, said there were no sour grapes about the loss of QI.

"QI is quite interesting, quite brilliantly produced and quite the most successful new comedy quiz of recent years, so it's quite right and proper that we send it on its way to BBC1 after five fantastic years," he insisted.

Regular panellist Alan Davies has also been confirmed for season six, which, as before, will see contestants handed heavy penalties and the embarrassment of claxon sounds when they deliver 'obvious' incorrect answers.
