Investigation into death of Heath Ledger to be 'dropped'
The investigation into the death of Heath Ledger is to be dropped, a US official has said.
Prosecutors were attempting to discover how the Australian actor managed to obtain powerful painkillers which contributed to his accidental overdose.
It was claimed the oxycodone and hydrocodone may have been obtained with false prescriptions.
An unnamed official told the Associated Press news agency that the case may now be dropped as prosecutors did not have a "viable target".
Earlier this week, actress Mary-Kate Olsen demanded immunity from prosecution before she agreed to speak to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) about Ledger's death and his drugs use.
The US actress was the first person the masseuse, who discovered Ledger's body, contacted.
The Dark Knight star Ledger was found to have consumed a number of drugs on the night he died including sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication.
