Estelle Swaray is back, and she is back with a bang! The singer and rapper was the headline act for BBC 1Xtra's 100 per cent Homegrown night at the recent BBC Electric Proms held at the world famous Jazz Cafe in Camden, London.
She didn't disappoint and certainly lived up to her billing. Based in New York, Estelle is signed to R 'n' B superstar John Legend's label Homeschool Records via Atlantic Records.
With over 200 people in attendance on the night, Estelle with her band and backing singers put on a performance as dazzling as her white sequinned dress.
During her electrifying 55 minutes on stage the MOBOs 2004 best newcomer performed over a dozen songs of both old and new material from her debut album The 18th Day, and new LP Shine.
In intimate surroundings Estelle captivated her crowd from the first minute to the last with her dancing and wide variety of musical talent reminiscent of a certain Lauryn Hill, ranging from the jazz-infused, Amy Winehouse-esque Wonder Why?, a song about men not committing to relationships, to the reggae-influenced My Love Is, a track explaining a woman's love for her man.
She had her audience dancing and singing to her two, and best known Top 20 hits, the autobiographical 1980, and the uplifting and inspiring Free which she performed with her sister.
Her final song was the highly anticipated and brand new single Wait A Minute (Just a Touch) produced by Black Eyed Pea supremo Will.i.am, which sent the appreciative crowd into ecstasy.
Estelle went off to a thundering and deafening applause, thanking the crowd and showcasing why she is definitely one to watch out for in 2008, and in my opinion, is on her way to becoming a superstar.
Wait A Minute (Just A Touch) is released via download on November 12th and available in stores on November 19th.
The album Shine is to be released in February 2008 and will feature collaborations from Wyclef Jean, Will.i.am, Swizz Beats, Mark Ronson, Kanye West and John Legend.
