What's it all about?

A little four-track introduction with subtle but impressive piano and drum beat and inspiring lyrics.

Who's it by?

The Blue Eyed Shark hails from British waters but his music has begun making waves on American and Canadian radio stations. All progress reports look good for the indie swimmer, but it is still very early days.

As an example…

"I held you in my arms, right by my side as I sleep at night... Sleep next to me."

So is it any good?

The Blue Eyed Shark Experiment is an excellent start. The four tracks recorded onto the quirky record design EP, demonstrate a varied musical ability whilst holding together a distinct style. These tracks really stand out as belonging to the Blue Shark, but unlike much of today's music, this faithful quality does not make the music any harder to listen to.

In all honesty, Generation is a poor start. I would predict the uncalled-for anger and gratuitous 'f' words in the lyrics are something of a turn off to fresh ears. Besides this they detract from the musical hooks that could bring to mind some of Muse's more recent offerings. From its rude beginnings, the track develops into an 80s tribute with insinuating whispered lyrics; its an ambitious blend and demonstrative of the Shark's tuneful variety, but even from this short EP we can hear he has more to offer.

The middle tracks are much more reflective; we are treated to gentle melodies, beautifully contrasted with the Shark's clear masculine voice. It is here I think the Blue Eyed Shark's skill really lies.

By closing track Rain we think we know what the 'Blue Eyed Shark Experiment' is all about: a gentle, contemplative but accessible lament, "with hints of Bon Iver and Badly Drawn Boy", suggests the record label. But the Shark swims right out of his established comfort zone as the track quickly picks up in to a jumpy sing-song, which with time, could herald the development of strong arena songs that the Shark could easily parade in a large gig venue.

It's obviously only the beginning, but the Blue Eyed Shark looks likely to have a very positive outcome from all his experimenting.

8/10
