Rockstar Records, out now.
In a nutshell...
To the point, bouncy, sing-a-long, no frills pop punk.
What's it all about?
The debut 'mini album' (EP to me and you) contains five three-minute bursts full of power chords, lead guitar and two line hooks ready for the crowd to learn and sing along.
Who's it by?
Hailing from the British South Coast and fronted by James Thomas, with Andy White on drums, Jack Fairbrother and Ash Oliver on guitars and Greg Day on bass.
As an example...
"I've found a way, to keep you coming...to keep you coming back."
Likelihood of a trip to the Grammys
Running at the same pace as some of todays pop punk chart toppers, there's a good chance you'll be hearing a lot more of these boys on Radio 1, but their alternative roots makes a number one single unlikely.
What the others say
"Glossy pop-punk with angst-soaked vocals so catchy they beg you to sing along." - Total Guitar
"The kind of shout-along hooks that will ensure blowing your throat out was never more fun." - Kerrang!
So is it any good?
One look at the band's Myspac' and you'd be forgiven for passing them off as another five piece, following the motions. Guitar: check, Vocal harmony: check, 'Whoa - Oh' chorus: check. The difference here is that Not Advised have what so many of these other bands lack - charisma.
The lyrics are to the point and they're not afraid to be who they are. One play through is enough to have the tracks stuck in your head and each one lasts just long enough to keep it from getting repetitive, with just enough melodic interlude to break up the copy and paste that usually plagues these bands.
It's nothing you haven't heard before, but it's done well.
8/10
