Who's Next? As a certain legendary band once asked. We seek to delve into the music industry and come up with a bountiful collection of stars to be. Or is that just wannabes?
This week it's the turn of New Young Pony Club.
In the niche enclave carved out in the indie landscape by CSS, comes a new arrival in the shape of New Young Pony Club (NYPC). It's disco heaven with a sexy chic about it, and a sassy vocal to rival their Brazilian counterparts.
NYPC aim to envelop every trendy female scenester who wishes they were in a band, but can't quite come up with the rhyming couplets of "creativity" and "relativity". Of course, NYPC's lyrics don't contain the next catchphrases of a revolutionary cult, but are more aimed at making your hips wiggle and your eyes go loopy under the intense disco ball.
The band's single, The Bomb, is catchier and more sophisticated than LCD Soundsystem with a chorus straight out of Blondie's back catalogue. It's easy to fall for at the same time as throwing layers of sound at you that you didn't think were possible from this kind of pop.
The opening seconds of The Bomb sounds like Client, however, NYPC move on from the opening beats and cataclysmically stamp all over a Client song, adding a little vitality to the genre of beat-pop. There's guitar, a little 80s synth and some sing-a-long verses from Ty, NYPC's vocalist.
Overall, NYPC are producing the kind of stuff that makes you stand up and take notice, easily stepping up to challenge for the next big thing in 2007 title.
NYPC will be touring throughout February as part of the NME tour.
The Bomb is available to download on February 12th and as a physical single on March 5th.
