The Spice Girls have said they would be delighted to perform at the celebrations for Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday.

The Daily Mirror reported last week that the former South African president was eager for the reformed girl group to perform at the all-star concert to be held in London's Hyde Park on June 27th.

However, Geri Halliwell said last week that the final concert of the five-piece's world tour in Toronto on February 26th was likely to be the final time they would take the stage together.

But speaking before the girl power group's show at New York City's Madison Square Garden, Sporty Spice - aka Melanie Chisholm - said the band would be thrilled to sing for Mandela if asked.

"We're great friends of Mr Mandela and we would love to perform for him again," she explained.

Halliwell added: "We were privileged enough to meet the man and he is just amazing.

"He's just an example of strength and humility and if we could be part of that, celebrating his life - wow."

The Wannabe stars first met Mandela in 1997 after being invited to his Pretoria presidential residence while in Johannesburg for a concert.

It is thought they were asked to sing at his 89th birthday celebrations last year but were unable to accept as Baby Spice Emma Bunton was heavily pregnant with her son Beau.

"What this reunion taught me is you can never say never," Halliwell said in an interview with Billboard.com last week.

"If you had asked me ten years ago whether there'd ever be a Spice Girls reunion concert, I'd have gone, 'No f***ing way!'"
