Seal, the British singer-songwriter, has today lost his long-running commissions court battle with former manager John Wadlow.
The 43-year-old musician, real name Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel, has been ordered to pay earnings from his first two albums equating to at least £500,000.
Further compensation is still be decided upon and a hearing later this year will determine the full amount to be paid.
Judge Charles Gray said that Wadlow had been "a reliable witness" and that he was in "no doubt" that he had been a key part in building Seal's success.
"It appeared to me that, at least in the early years of his career as an artist, he had little interest in its financial aspects and preferred to concentrate on his music," Mr Justice Gray said.
"I found Mr Wadlow to be a reliable witness. His recollection of events, whilst far from perfect, was for understandable reasons better than that of Seal.
"I suspect that his involvement in the music business came about as a result of his love of music rather than a desire to make money."
Seal, best know for huge hit Crazy, was born in London but now lives in New York with his model wife Heidi Klum.
