Robbie Williams is to receive the outstanding contribution to music prize at next year's Brit Awards, it's been announced.

The 35-year-old pop star has been described by the Brits committee as "one of the outstanding artists and performers of his generation".

Williams has already 11 Brits in his solo career, making him the most successful singer in the awards' history. He also picked up four trophies during his time in Take That.

The Angels singer recently made his long-awaited comeback after three years away from the music business.

His first live performance on the X Factor last weekend was met with a mixed reaction, with Williams later blaming a faulty stage door for his nervous performance.

However the British pop star received much warmer reviews for his appearance at the BBC Electric Proms on Wednesday night.

Speculation he may perform with Take That in the near future was once again fuelled when he revealed a new tattoo of the band's symbol during his performance.
