Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood has won BBC Radio 3's listener's award for his groundbreaking orchestral work, Popcorn Superhet Receiver.
Greenwood, best known to music fans for his key role in helping guide the development of avant garde rock band Radiohead, developed on his long-term interest in classical music after his band decided to take a six-month break after their most recent tour.
The 35-year-old composer-in-residence at the BBC beat fellow nominated composers including Gary Carpenter, Morgan Harvey, Andrew Toovey and Fraser Trainer.
He wins a £10,000 prize for his work, based on radio static and the work of 20th century composers, which will allow him to accept a new commission for a new orchestral work.
Remembering the moment when the BBC concert orchestra tackled his orchestral piece, Greenwood told the Daily Telegraph that he got rather emotional.
"As long as I looked down and just listened it was ok. But, if I concentrated on watching all those people spending time on my stuff, that really blew me away. That was when I knew I had to shut my eyes."
He takes it all very seriously, bless.
