Radio 1 scoops top Sony award
Radio 1 was named best UK station of the year at last nights Sony Radio Academy Awards.
Awarding the station the prize for the first time in the awards 24 year history, Sony judges praised Radio1 for its "impressive sense of rediscovered self" and said it demonstrated a clear understanding of its audience.
The stations breakfast show host Chris Moyles beat Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans to the best entertainment award, but the once-troubled DJ was compensated when he was named radio personality of the year for his drive time show.
Accepting his award from musician Andrea Corr, Evans thanked the BBC for giving him "a second chance".
London radio station LBC scooped the award for best breakfast show for the "warm, funny and brilliantly informed" work of Nick Ferrari, while various commercial radio stations won four of the five station of the year awards.
BBC Radio 4 scooped seven awards, including the prize for best news and current affairs programme for its six o'clock news bulletin, while Capital Radio received the breaking news award for their coverage of last Julys London bombings.
Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe put in the most impressive individual performance after being named music broadcaster of the year and scooping a second award for the best specialist music programme.
Meanwhile, veteran Radio 2 broadcaster Terry Wogan received Sonys gold award for outstanding achievement after 40 years within the industry.
Commenting on last nights event, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Londons Park Lane, chairman of Sonys awards committee Tim Blackmore said: "I'm thrilled that our now multi-platform radio industry has once again demonstrated that the intimacy of audio communication remains as potent a force as ever."
