Midweek sales figures will be publicly revealed for the first time in a new 'official chart update' to be broadcast on Radio 1.
DJ Greg James will host the 30-minute countdown on Wednesday afternoons while the official chart rundown will remain on Sundays.
Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company, commented: "The launch of this official chart update will mean that, for the first time, music fans will get a reliable insight into how the race for number one is shaping up."
Midweek sales figures are typically revealed to music industry employees on a Wednesday morning and indicate the likely top ten once the official chart is announced.
But with 98 per cent of singles sales in the UK now coming from downloads, the midweek show will now preview the expected chart-topper but also give fans a chance to get behind their record of choice should it be struggling.
James, who will hot the 15:30-16:00 show on Wednesdays on Radio 1, commented: "I want to shine a light on all the songs going in and dropping out of the charts.
"Why are people buying a specific record? Why aren't they buying that one? Reasons like that."
The midweek singles and album chart updates will also be published on the Radio 1 website and on the Facebook and Twitter social networking sites.
