'30,000 freaks' descend on Bestival

Festivalgoers descend on Isle of Wight for this year's Bestival; Santogold, Aphex Twin and Amy Winehouse due to perform
Festivalgoers are today descending on the Isle of Wight for this year's Bestival and its 30,000 Freaks under the Sea theme.

The three-day event at Robin Hill Country Park, the summer's last major festival, is now in its fifth year.

Bestival 2008's opening day will see Alphabeat, Ladyhawke, Santogold and CSS perform, with Pendulum and My Bloody Valentine taking to the stage in the evening.

On Saturday the big question will be whether Amy Winehouse turns up for her headline slot, with Hot Chip and Aphex Twin – in their only festival appearance of 2008 – also on the programme.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and Lethal Bizzle then round off Rob da Bank's labour of love on Sunday.

There had been fears leading up to Bestival that the weekend could be a washout following several days of bad weather.

But writing on his blog yesterday Rob da Bank moved to reassure festivalgoers.

"With everything from gales to blistering sun forecast for the weekend I've given up on making predictions. I've got shorts and a sou'wester for any eventuality," he said.

Da Bank added: "The theme for this year's show is 30,000 Freaks Under The Sea so if it rains the masks, snorkels and shells should come in handy!"
