Sir Mick Jagger has pulled out of a UK event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, claiming he feared he would be used as a "political football".

The Rolling Stones frontman has said he will now cut short his visit to the Swiss resort, citing "inaccurate" comments on his political allegiances, adding that he has "eschewed party politics" during his career.

Prime minister David Cameron is hosting the tea party, which is designed to showcase British talent.

Jagger issued a statement following stories in UK newspapers that claimed he was backing the prime minister.

He claimed that he has always been interested in economics and world events, but said that it was best that he now declined the invitation.

London mayor Boris Johnson is due to appear at the event after the British delegation at Davos decided that "a cup of tea and a biscuit mid-afternoon" was the most frugal way to gain access to the global financial elite.
