World Magazine has apologised to the singer Morrissey after apparently suggesting the former Smiths frontman was a racist and a hypocrite.

The singer took the magazine to court after it published an article in its March edition regarding his political views.

Caroline Kean, World Magazine's lawyer, said that the publication offered "sincere apologies" to Morrissey.

The 48-year-old said he was "obviously delighted with this victory and the clearing of my name in public where it is loud and clear for all to hear".

The controversial article, written by David Quantick, made reference to statements made by Morrissey in an edition of the music magazine NME in December.

Morrissey's lawyer, John Reid, alleged that Mr Quantick had made comments in his article that had been "construed to suggest that Mr Morrissey was a racist, held racist opinions or that [as the child of migrant parents] he was a hypocrite".

"The article suggested that Mr Morrissey has in the past paid lip service only to anti-racism," Mr Reid added.

The singer is still involved in a legal action against the weekly music magazine NME which he claims published an article trying "to damage my integrity and to label me as a racist in order to boost their diminishing circulation".
