inthenews.co.uk's Lewis Bazley is astonished by the west Londoners at the Camden Crawl 2008.

Labels scrambled to sign west London trio White Lies after their debut gig in February and after witnessing their awe-inspiring 80s-tinted pop, it's not hard to see why.

Lead vocalist Harry McVeigh has more than a hint of Ian Curtis about his stage presence and when an audience member at the Electric Ballroom remarks "They're like the Killers, but Northern," all the pieces fall into place and the huge promise of this threesome is clear.

Their sound is as 80s as Roland Rat and shoulder pads and as Talking Heads-esque bass shudders over staccato, the professionalism of ones so young is staggering.

Spine-tingling switches between low-key synth interludes and bombastic chorus are made all the more effective by a foreboding and simplistic light show and when penultimate track Death erupts with an impudence befitting of Brandon Flowers, mouths fall open around the ballroom.

There's a feeling shared by those in attendance and it's one that nags and is hard to ignore - these boys are going to be big.

Debut single Unfinished Business is released on April 28th.
