The dynamic duo focused their evening around a magic roundabout of the musical gismos and gadgets which were set up on an island in the middle of the stage.
As a result of this strange setup Jas spend most of the evening with his back to the crowd. It was the charm of this setup though that created the feeling that they were still in their spare room at uni, just messing around and having a good time. Combined with the lighting which appeared to have been stolen from Radiohead, the stage was set for an entertaining and exciting evening.
The crowd seemed to enjoy both the music and the atmosphere. From the new songs to the old they were mesmerised by the whole display. Hustler received a resounding welcome but the highlight of the night had to be Audacity of Huge from their new album. I wasn't impressed with it when I first heard it, but live it was amazing. The crowd was clearly appreciative too and relished every moment.
There was a clear problem with the evening though, the setting. When we were leaving, my friend put his finger on it. Had we just been to a gig or a set? Simian are a duet at the top of their game and were recently playing at Fabric. But the Forum is more the location you would go to for a live gig. As a result I spent the night in limbo with half of me bobbing away and the other half wanting to throw my arms in the air and rave the night away.
Though the Forum wasn't the best venue for them, it's a credit to Simian that it was still one of the best gigs/sets I have ever seen. They were entertaining, engaging and encapsulating. They really are one of the must-see acts around at the moment.
