A shot of fairground pop from Scouse trio Elle S'appelle
inthenews.co.uk's Lewis Bazley is won over by Liverpudlian trio Elle S'appelle during the second night of the Camden Crawl.
With their mix of the Cure meets Yeah Yeah Yeahs chirpy pop, Elle S'appelle could almost be
too enthusiastic for the cynical crowds of the
Camden Crawl.
When an Eye of the Tiger-esque grinding bassline seems set to empty the Underworld, the set is pulled back from the brink by an anarchic organ melody, with the band's childlike enthusiasm somehow erasing any notion of scorn from the swiftly pogoing audience.
A happy marriage of bass and synth swivels and slides for position through the all-too-brief set and when singer Lucy Blakely tells those in attendance: "I'm gonna be dancing, you should too," resistance is futile.
When Blakeley
really belts it, hers and Andy Donavan's voices mesh perfectly and it's hard not to grin at the winning homemade feel of their optimistic offerings.
Here's the video for their brilliant debut single Little Flame:
