Dan Kelly on a catchy, breathless but familiar performance from the up-and-coming punks.
Being no strangers to playing as the supporting act for some of the better known punk rock bands, such as Alkaline Trio and Bad Religion, Broadway Calls certainly don't have any issues opening up for the Offspring. But they aren't here just to warm up the crowd.
With not much time to waste they steamed into their set with a very catchy collection of songs, hardly even pausing in between each of them to play the next. The band's sound is fairly comparable with New Found Glory.
There wasn't anything particularly spectacular that they mustered up during their set, not to say what they did do wasn't done particularly well though. Their infectious pop-punk style seemed to sit quite well with me; it's more that there wasn't anything technically brilliant about them; they don't bring anything new to the genre. What you saw was what you got and that seems to works extremely well for this group.
They seemed to cram a lot in to their timeslot. Unfortunately this had an effect on their stage presence making it somewhat limited to a brief introduction mid-set and the rather curious-while-entertaining antics that Josh Baird the drummer seemed to be doing throughout. In my opinion this was where they fell down the most in their set, getting a lower crowd reaction than they could have done.
On the whole this band is a worth spending the time to listen to live, they won't disappoint throughout the performance they put on, but at the same time they aren't going to make you drop everything to run to the shops and buy their albums.
