A letter hand-written by Ludwig van Beethoven has emerged in Germany after it had been left in a will.

The six-page document, which is full of the composer's scrawled corrections, contains details of his money woes and illness.

Broadcaster and Beethoven expert John Suchet has described finding the 1823 letter as "hugely significant".

He told BBC News that although the letter's existence was already known, actually finding it is a fillip for experts.

"It means we can look at his handwriting, which was always untidy, because his father took him out of school very early so he could concentrate on music," he added.

It is thought that the document could be worth more than €100,000 (£82,000), with the director of the Beethoven House Museum Michael Ladenburger claiming that the letter's appeal will be "very great".

A 'lost movement' of one of Beethoven's string quartets was performed for the first time last year after being rediscovered.
